Below: "This is looking south on 12th Avenue at Market Street. In the early 1940s, this was the west end of US 80. Southbound US 101 was straight ahead and northbound was to the right on Market. This was also the south end of US 395."

Below: "At some time during WWII, US 80 was extended to Cabrillo National Monument, to serve the military facilities on Point Loma. This may have been before or after it was extended to Pacific Highway (see below). This shows the end of the current route (CA hwy. 209) at the monument boundary. Ahead is a turnaround at the end of the road."

(Not sure when that photo was taken, but CA 209 has since been decommissioned, and Alex Nitzman reports the "End" sign was gone as of 2005.)
Below: "Sometime after WWII, US 80 was cut back to Pacific Highway & Market Street. In this picture we're looking west on what used to be Market (but is now part of modern Harbor Drive); northbound US 101 would have been to the right, and southbound would have been to the left (via historic Harbor Drive. After Seaport Village was built in the late 1990's, this area was completely reconstructed; the road to the left now dead-ends). The south end of US 395 was also moved to this point."

That used to be northbound US 101, and to the right on Market was the beginning of both US 80 and US 395.
Below: "With the building of the Alvarado Freeway in 1957 (current I-8), US 80 was moved to it, and it ended at the junction with US 101 (now I-5). This was how it was until US 80 was completely removed from California. This picture shows the current junction of I-8 and I-5, looking west."
