Maps of US highway 1 branch routes in the mid-Atlantic states

US 401 [I], US 401 [II], US 401 [III], US 501, US 601, US 701

You can view a map showing the entirety of US 1 and all of its branches (including US 301) here. The maps on this page isolate US 1's shorter branch routes in Virginia and the Carolinas. This first one shows the two historic routes:

Above:

US 401 [I] (historic) is represented by the red line from South Hill to South Boston VA.

US 401 [II] (historic) is the red line from Raleigh NC to Walterboro SC.

Note how historic US 401 [II] (above) followed nearly the same route that modern US 401 does today (below):

Above:

US 401 is the blue line from near Norlina NC to Sumter SC.

US 701 is the blue line beginning in Four Oaks NC. Its current southern terminus is in Georgetown SC; the red line south from there to Charleston is the historic extent of US 701.

Below:

US 501 is the blue line from Buena Vista VA to Myrtle Beach SC. Its historic routing to Burkeville VA is shown in red.

US 601 is the blue line beginning in Mt. Airy NC. Its current southern terminus is in Pineland SC; the red line south from there to Hardeeville is the historic extent of US 601. Also shown in red is the original routing of US 601 between Florence SC and Salisbury NC.
