The field-checking allowed me to indicate details such as one-way streets and footbridges; to add roads out in the county that weren't shown on any other source; and to determine which roads on the source map from the city were actually built and which were only "paper roads". The city engineers liked the result so much that now they ask me for a copy after each annual update:

In recent years I've been creating all my basemaps in CMYK (even if the phone book requires a 1-color map). A full-color map can be used for more purposes if the need ever arises, and then if the directory ever upgrades to full-color, I've already got a map that will work. In the meantime, I've found it's a pretty simple matter to convert a CMYK map to 1-color... much easier, at least, than going the other direction. Alamosa is one such example: the master map (above) is in CMYK, but after each round of updates I convert a copy to black-only and then generate the page-size maps for the directory (below):
