Detroit Lakes, MN
(Created 2005)
The base data was from MNDoT, which I've found to be fairly up-to-date, and the quality of the linework is acceptable. I used USGS topos and Terraserver imagery for building footprints. Inspired by Tom Patterson (a cartographer with the National Park Service), I experimented with a new graphic style for water bodies on this map: instead of a "hard edge" (darker blue stroke), I tried a lighter line, to give the lakes a "softer", more organic look. I also used a new feature in FreeHand to give the lakes a subtle graduated fill that parallels the shoreline.
