Although DLG data from USGS was available, the linework had been digitized from photos taken in the 1950s - 1970s! Many new transportation developments had taken place in the Lewiston area during the intervening decades, so fortunately I was also able to use brand-new GIS data from Nez Perce County, and register it to my USGS base. I also created a shaded-relief image from USGS DEM's - which was great, because topography is a huge factor in this part of the country. A then-new transparent lens-fill feature in FreeHand was the final piece of the puzzle - there were several new technologies that converged during the production of this map, so for me it was a breakthrough.
