100 years of US routes: 1926-2026
This page is about the east segment of US 422 (not to be confused with the separate west segment of US 422).
Mileage: in 1989 AASHTO listed a figure of 88 miles for US 422(e). That is reasonably close to our own 2020 measurement, which yielded 82.9 miles. Want historic mileages? Our handy reference book includes the mileages that were published in all 13 of AASHO/AASHTO's historic route logs (spanning the years 1927 to 1989).

For about the first 60 years of its existence, the east end of the eastern segment of US 422 was at various points around Philadelphia. From 1927 to 1931, US 422 made it only as far west as Reading, but then US 422 was extended to an endpoint in Harrisburg.
In 1960 the west end of US 422 was truncated to its current terminus, which is between Hershey and Hummelstown, at its junction with US 322. These photos were from eastbound US 322, at the beginning of US 422:
These shots were taken from the opposite direction, looking towards US 422's interchange with US 322 and PA hwy. 39:
In 1984 the east end of US 422 was truncated to its current location in King of Prussia, at its junction with US 202. The last eastbound trailblazer was posted just before the Pennsylvania Turnpike underpass:
Not far ahead, signage indicates the options that are available to drivers at the east terminus of US 422:
Before that sign bridge was installed, the ground-mounted sign at that location included an "End" assembly:
These next photos show signage for the beginning of US 422 as seen from US 202 (northbound and southbound, respectively):
Drivers exiting to US 422 there will soon encounter the first westbound confirming marker:
