100 years of US routes: 1926-2026
1926-1939
East: Bowie, TX
West: Amarillo, TX *
* Many historic maps and documents indicate US 370 ended in Claude or Washburn, but the Amarillo page explains why that was never actually the case.
US 370 was approx. 270 miles in length.
US 370 was among the original routes of 1926, serving the Ft. Worth - Amarillo corridor. Its eastern terminus was always at US 81 in Bowie. This photo was taken looking northwest on Wise Street, or northbound US 81, which splits off to the right just ahead:
US 370 began straight ahead on Wise. In 1939 that became part of an extended US 287. After today's US 287 bypass was built, Wise may have been Business 287, but now it appears to be only FM 174. Signage at the gore is shown here:
Here, we are looking east on FM 174; historically eastbound US 370 ended at this junction:
The west end of US 370 was in Amarillo (despite lots of historic information that suggests otherwise; see the Amarillo page for maps and more details).
