100 years of US routes: 1926-2026
The US Numbered Highway network was:
conceived in 1924
designed in 1925
implemented in 1926
publicized in 1927
The most important date in the history of the US route system was November 11, 1926. That was the day when AASHO (American Association of State Highway Officials) gave the green light to all of the state depts. of transportation to signpost their US routes and to label them on their official state highway maps (although some states jumped the gun on this by a few months). Therefore, November 11, 2026, marks a special 100th anniversary for US highway enthusiasts. Born 1926 and still alive
It should be noted that not all US routes will be celebrating their 100th birthday on Nov. 11, 2026. Following is a list of the US routes which were "born" on that day in 1926, and which are still "alive" today, 100 years later. This list includes the 1926 endpoints; during the intervening 100 years many of these routes have been extended or truncated. US 191, 290, and 601 are shown in italics because they are "grandfather's axe" highways, meaning no part of their original route is still a part of their current route:

Born 1926 but didn't survive to 100
Following is a list of US routes that were "born" on Nov. 11, 1926, but these designations did not survive long enough to celebrate their 100th birthday (most of them not even close). Note that the endpoints listed below were at the time of their "birth" in 1926; many of these termini were changed later. Routes in italics were "stillborn", i.e. they were never signposted. Numerical designations in bold were recycled later for different routes which do exist today:
