100 years of US routes: 1926-2026
US route endpoint in
1939-1951
The routes of US 183 and 283 through Texas today are quite different than how they were historically. Following are two agenda items that were in the minutes of AASHO's 1939 meeting:
At that time, the routes of US 183 and 283 were changed such that they joined in Brady and overlapped through Mason, along what is now US 377. For about the next year, US 83 was still using what is now FM 2291 between Menard and Junction, so US 183-283 must have gone all the way to US 290:

Then in about 1940, US 83 was changed to its current alignment, which overlapped the southernmost segment of US 183-283. That means US 183-283 could have been truncated by about a mile...

...although it is more likely that the routes were overlapped with US 83 south into Junction, continuing to terminate at the same intersection with US 290. These photos were looking south on US 377, just past the I-10 interchange (exit 456):

That was once US 83 (today that route bypasses town via I-10). Coming in from the right is RM 1694, which is the old alignment of US 290. Eastbound 290 continued straight ahead (with southbound US 83), and US 183-283 ended there. Here is the assembly posted for travelers heading east on 1674:

Originally that was the perspective of a driver on eastbound US 290, which continued to the right. That was also southbound US 83, while northbound was to the left. Also to the left was the south beginning of US 183-283. Here we are looking north on US 377:

Historically that was northbound US 83 and westbound US 290, which split at that junction, with US 290 continuing to the left via today's RM 1674. Ahead was US 83, and also the south beginning of US 183-283.
