100 years of US routes: 1926-2026
1927-1941
This map indicated that US 17-1 had a junction with US 1 on Sycamore at Washington:
This photo was taken looking north on Sycamore, approaching Washington:
Straight ahead was northbound US 1, while southbound was to the left on Washington. So that may have been the north end of US 17-1 from 1927 to 1932. Then in 1932, US 301 was commissioned. The north segment of US 17-1 was completely subsumed by US 301...
...so that may have been the north end of US 301 (today Sycamore carries US 301 Alternate). But was that actually the terminus? It seems more likely that US 301 (and US 17-1 before it) would have been overlapped with US 1 to the north for a few more blocks on Sycamore, ending at Bank Street. This would have brought traffic past the courthouse...
...and to a terminus at Corling's Corner, which was a highly-visible downtown intersection. US 1 continued ahead on Sycamore, while VA 10 split off to the right on Bank. That intersection may well have marked the north end of US 17-1, and later US 301 until 1941.
