100 years of US routes: 1926-2026
Mileage: in 1989 AASHTO listed a figure of 250 miles for US 259. That closely matches our own 2020 measurement, which yielded 254.0 miles. Want historic mileages? Our handy reference book includes the mileages that were published in all 13 of AASHO/AASHTO's historic route logs (spanning the years 1927 to 1989).
US 259 joined the crowd relatively recently (1962). Its north end is at its junction with US 59-270 (which is visible in the background), just west of Page:
These photos show the north beginning of US 259 as seen from US 59-270 (southbound and northbound, respectively):
Travelers making that turn to the south are soon greeted with the first southbound confirming sign:
The south end of US 259 is in Nacogdoches; this terminus also occurs at a junction with US 59. There, if one continues straight ahead past the US 59 exits, they find themselves on Business 59 (which is the original mainline 59 through town). Older signage did not indicate that, but that was changed when these signs were converted to Clearview:
Heading the opposite direction (north on Business 59, leaving town) these photos show the south beginning of US 259 and, just ahead, the first northbound confirming assembly...
...however, that was placed prior to the ramp that leads from southbound US 59 to northbound US 259, so drivers using that exit will not see a confirming assembly for about a mile.
