When the US routes were initially approved in November 1926, US 15 went only as far north as Virginia, and US 111 was planned to run between Baltimore and Harrisburg. But already by April 1927, the north end of US 15 had been extended to Harrisburg, and US 111 had been extended north from there, ending at the New York state line in Lawrenceville:

Since then, US 15 traffic has been moved to a bypass. But there at the stateline was the north beginning of US 111 until 1936. At that time, the US 15 designation was extended north along the former US 111, so that designation was truncated to the Harrisburg area (specifically Lemoyne).
The south end of US 111 was always in Baltimore, until the route was decommissioned in 1963. |
