Please note:
As of Oct. 2020, this page is no longer a public-facing part of the usends.com website, because we have determined that US 270 was probably never a signposted route. More info is available on this page. This US 270 page is no longer maintained, and is kept only for archival purposes. Click here if you are looking for the current US 270, which was commissioned in 1930.
End of historic US highway 270 [i]
Today's US 270 was not commissioned until 1930. A different US 270 was included among the original routes of 1926. Although it was shown on many early maps (like the one below), Tennessee actually never signposted it (more info on this page):
From Sparta, US 270 essentially followed the path of what is now US 70-S, although it would have ended at its junction with US 41 in Murfreesboro. This interactive image is looking south on Maney Avenue. Straight ahead was southbound US 41, while northbound was to the right on Main Street. To the left on Main was the proposed west beginning of US 270:

Instead of US 270, Tennessee wanted the route to be designated US 70-S. In 1929 AASHO finally granted their wish, and the following year the number was recycled and applied to modern US 270. Later, the routing of US 70-S was changed to follow Broad Street and Mercury Boulevard.
