Mileage: in 1989 AASHTO listed a figure of 574 miles for US 76... however, that included the mileage of US 76's associated business routes. According to the state subtotals on AASHTO's 1989 spreadsheet, mainline US 76's actual end-to-end total at the time was 547 miles. That is reasonably close to our own 2020 measurement, which yielded 538.1 miles (reroutings and realignments likely explain the difference).

The crossroad is Main Street, which originally carried US 25-29. The west beginning of US 76 was straight ahead on North.
At the time, the east end of US 76 was in Florence. In 1932 the west end of US 76 was truncated at Laurens SC, and instead extended via its modern corridor through Georgia to Chattanooga. Then in 1934, the east end was extended to Wrightsville Beach, where it remains to this day.
