...so that may have been the north end of US 301 (today Sycamore carries US 301 Alternate). But was that actually the terminus? It seems more likely that US 301 (and US 17-1 before it) would have been overlapped with US 1 to the north for a few more blocks on Sycamore, ending at Bank Street. This would have brought traffic past the courthouse...

...and to a terminus at Corling's Corner, which was a highly-visible downtown intersection. US 1 continued ahead on Sycamore, while VA 10 split off to the right on Bank. That intersection may well have marked the north end of US 17-1, and later US 301 until 1941.
