(Last updated 08/10/2021) These first two images were taken looking south on NM hwy. 469 in San Jon. There, Historic US 66 is now designated as Frontage Road 4118. I was surprised to see that its route marker was a wooden cutout (tap to view a larger version):
Note that the cutout is detailed enough to show the minuscule "panhandle" in the northeast corner of New Mexico:
The backside of the marker reveals a date stamp of 1996. In the photos below, note the I-40 overpass in the distance. That is approximately a quarter-mile away, so "frontage road" seems like an inappropriate way to refer to old US 66 at this location:
A similar marker is posted for northbound traffic; it has quite a bit more damage from UV rays:
Not all NM frontage roads are signed with cutouts; please comment below if you are aware of any other examples.
